The typical New Jersey business insurance policy includes cover for losses and damage experienced due to theft. Some business owners do not think they are at risk of being robbed and therefore they may not obtain the proper coverage. Is your business truly immune to robbers?

During December 2011, the News of Cumberland County newspaper reported on a spree of smash-and-grab burglaries among local businesses. What is a smash-and-grab? It is a type of burglary that involves perpetrators forcing their way into a business, grabbing everything they can carry, and getting out as quickly as possible.

Certain businesses were targeted by thieves multiple times. Affordable Tire in Bridgeton, NJ was robbed twice in a seven-day period. The financial loss the business sustained during the first burglary on December 21 was about $1,200 in both cash and inventory. The second theft happened the following Tuesday. This time the criminals got away with only a cash register containing a little change.

How can you lower your chance of being a victim of a smash-and-grab? Installing video cameras and alarm systems can help deter criminals. You should also consider moving merchandise away from the entrances and securing displays to the floor. These changes may also help lower your New Jersey business insurance rates when it comes time to renew your policy if your insurer offers discounts for improved security.
